Norwegian Folk Musician of the Year 2010, fiddler and singer Sigrid Moldestad’s latest award-winning album Sandkorn (Grain of Sand) features her own material, as well as translations of Burns’ songs, mixing the music of the fjords with folk-blues-rock. Fribo (‘Open House’), made up of fellow Norwegian singer Anne Sofie Linge Valdal, Scottish fiddler Hannah Read, Edinburgh guitarist Ewan MacPherson and Swedish percussionist Magnus Lundmark, have toured all over the UK, North America, and Europe. The evening includes a Halling dance performance from the winner of Eurovision 2009, Anders Aasberg.

Northern Streams: Children’s Folklore Session

Come with us on a journey through music, song, dance and story which draws on the different traditions of Scotland, presented by James MacDonald Reid (Artistic Director of the Drumalban Folk Ensemble). Born in Argyll, with time spent in Canada, James has always been interested in Scottish traditions and how they connect to other traditions across Europe and recently he has been researching living Slavic and Norse folklore. This session is most suitable for 6-12 year olds.

The Shatila Project: Croak, The King and a Change in the Weather

A performance by the children of Shatila Palestinian Refugee Camp, Beirut of Peter Mortimer’s fable on how a cruel and dictatorial monarch is brought low by the forces of nature. Peter Mortimer created the play, which uses live music, dance and mime, whilst living for two months in the camp, which he revisited in early 2011. The 3pm show will be followed by a special musical performance by ‘Trad for Teens’, part of the Edinburgh Youth Gaitherin.

Acclaimed American musicians, Abby Newton (cello) and Kim Robertson (harp) join forces with one of Scotland’s premier fiddlers and singers, Mairi Campbell. They perform the vibrant folk music of Scotland and North America, where Scottish Highland music has continued in a living tradition since the 18th century. From soulful songs and airs to high-spirited strathspeys and reels, their combined talent and passion for tradition unleash the power of this timeless music. Ralf presents his current album Hugs and Kisses, with many original compositions and some variations on Scottish and Irish tunes.

Laoise will perform material from her new album ‘Ceis’. It gives a fresh lease of life to ancient airs, previously unheard for centuries, with new compositions from legendary fiddler Tommy Peoples. The Poozies are back to entertain and enthral you with their strongest line-up yet. These pioneers of musical diversity will leave you breathless, with Eilidh Shaw (fiddle), Mairearad Green (accordion), Sally Barker(guitar), Patsy Seddon (harp/fiddle) and Mary Macmaster (electro-harp/ clarsach). The winning entry in the Clarsach Society’s 2010 Young Composers’ competition will also be announced and performed.

The Red Earth by Mairi Campbell and Dave Francis

In story, song and music, The Cast (Mairi Campbell, David Francis) unfold a gripping tale based on true events in Campbell’s family. A tale of the courage, faith, loss and triumph of two generations of Scots missionaries and their life in China in the first half of the twentieth century, set against a background of war, invasion and civil unrest. Performing again after a sell-out run at the Edinburgh Fringe 2010.
