Mr McFall's Chamber Presents: Martyn Bennett & Fraser Fifield

Mr McFall's Chamber return to The Queen's Hall to present their latest album on Delphian Records which features the music of Martyn Bennett and Fraser Fifield. Martyn Bennett was one of Scotland's most innovative musicians, combining the traditional and modern, the local and international, until this tragically early death in 2005. Fraser Fifield is another of Scotland's great musical innovators who has used his virtuoso skills as multi-instrumentalist in groups as diverse as Salsa Celtica and Old Blind Dogs. For this concert, Mr. McFall's Chamber will feature guests Tom Bancroft and Jame Mackintosh (percussion), Chris George (violin), Fraser Fifield (pipes and whistles), Phil Alexander (piano) alongside their usual line-up of Ricky Standley (bass), Su-a Lee (cello), Brian Schiele (viola) and Robert McFall (violin).

The Lowlands and Borders Piping Society: Annual Piping Competition

This competition is all about enjoyment and musicality, you will hear various bellows blown pipes played in a range of classes, including solo pipes, duet for pipes, pipe and song, duet for pipe and voice and duet for pipes and other instruments. We welcome audience participation by asking 5 different people selected randomly for each class to award each competitor marks out of 10. The remaining 50 marks are awarded by our judge for that particular class. Marks are awarded for overall performance, musicality and enjoyment. Alan (vocal, keyboard, guitar, piano, accodion) has been an ever present member of the Battlefield Band since a few months after its inception in 1969. The 'Batties' have been pre-eminent in Scottish traditional music for over 30 years, have toured all over the world and made almost 30 recordings. Rob (vocals, guitars, mandolin) is a guitarist of exceptional skill and subtelty. He was born in the Netherlands and begun playing guitar at an early age. A terrific evening of poetry and music in the Central Reference Library will feature recitations by acclaimed broadcaster and author Billy Kay, interwoven with musical contributions by Rod Paterson along with some of Scotland's finest folk instrumentalists. The programme will be based on Fergusson's Auld Reekie, a compilation album of music and poetry which creates such a vivid portrait of 18th century Edinburgh. Fergusson was born off the High Street in Edinburgh in 1750 and died tragically young in the city's madhouse in 1774. Burns described him as 'by far my elder brother in the muse'. Tom Daun is one of the leading folk harp players in Germany, making regular appearances at both Folk festivals and Early Music events. He began his studies at Cologne Conservatory then spent some years as a postgraduate at Edinburgh University. His music ranged from Renaissance and Baroque to Celtic tunes and his own compositions. Steeped in traditional music from growing up in his native piedmont in Italy, Enzo Vacca has performed at festivals throughout Europe. For this performance he is joined by three Scottish musicians to present music based on the collections made by Constantino Nigra.

If he had to choose among his many influences, the one he would name is Tom Waits.

Paul Dooley presents an eclectic selection of old and new pieces from the Celtic countries, featuring mainly Irish dance music, exploring connections within different strands of the tradition as well as compositions by the celebrated 17th and 18th century Irish harper/composers such as Turlough O'Carolan and the Connellan brothers and medieval welsh pieces from the Robert as Huw manuscript. Rachel Newton and Lillias Kinsman-Blake's music draws on influences from the Highlands of Scotland to the Borders and beyond, incorporating both Gaelic and English songs with traditional and contemporary melodies. A Geordie by birth, Emily Hoile's repertoire, ranging from traditional to contemporary folk including her own compositions, has delighted audiences each side of the border. She played at the first ever Folk Prom in London, performed with Sting in Gateshead and was the youngest finalist in 2008 Radio 2 Young Folk Awards, where "she demonstrated absolute mastery of her instrument."

Maggie MacInnes will sing Gaelic songs many of which have been in her family for generations as well as one or two favourite scots songs. "The Trio of Maggie singing and playing clarsach, Brian McAlpine on keyboards and accordion and Anna Massie on guitar, generates a subtle yet emphatic pallet of accompaniment at times sparse, at others gently swinging with lilting syncopations and then rapid fire reeling." 'Making the Connection' was specially written by Corrina Hewat for the first 'New Voices' series at the Celtic Connections Festival. Corrina has rewritten it for two harps (Corrina herself and Mary MacMaster), two voices (Inge Thomson and Mairi Campbell), pipes (Lorne MacDougall) and percussion (Donald Hay) plus the inimitable Mr McFall's Chamber (Lise Aferiat and Robert McFall, violins; Brian Schiele, viola; Su-a Lee, cello and Rick Standley, double bass). Edinburgh International Harp Festival: Isobel Mieras / Tamnak Prathon Junior Harp Ensemble / RSAMD Harp Quartet

The Festival Orchestra and members of na Clarsairean perform The Megget Valley, a suite by Isobel Mieras, incorporating traditional and new music in a celebration of Scotland's border country. A hint of Thailand: this unique international project fuses the wealth and colours of Thai folk music, the country's classical heritage and contemporary jazz style in compositions by the King of Thailand. The Tamnak Prathon Harp Centre came into being seven years ago and the harp ensemble was formed just over a year ago. In addition to numerous public performances, the group appeared at the First Thailand International Harp Festival and Youth Competition 2009. RSAMD Harp Quartet is a creative and vibrant group of talented young musicians whose goal is to promote modern harp music by collaborating with living composers and arrangers.

Lee Moore (Highland and Scottish small pipes), Steve Reid (guitar), Alex Campbell (mandolin) and Stevie Fivey (percussion) were Danny Kyle Award Wnner's at Celtic Connections 2001and have released two critically acclaimed acclaimed albums. 'The First Measure' released in 2002 on the Greentrax label and 'Roag' released in 2006 on Phat Controller Records. They are currently working on their third album.

Paul Brady - singer, songwriter, musician and producer - has been at the forefront of popular music in Ireland for over 40 years. Starting out in The Johnstons and Planxty, he began to write his own songs in the early 1980's and has since forged a reputation as one of Ireland's finest singer-songwriters, releasing many popular and critically acclaimed records. Soon after the 1981 release of 'Hard Station' - his first album of his own compositions in 1981 - his songwriting began to come to the attention of artists worldwide and in 1982 Carlos Santana recorded 'Night Hunting Time'.
