Folk group, Svanevit, from Sweden has many unique combinations of instruments including Swedish and medieval bagpipes. Led by Erik Ask-Upmark, this opportunity is to try Swedish tunes that may be suitable for small pipes. This extended workshop time will allow plenty of time to try tunes out to see which ones work the best and maybe even explore harmonies! Stay on for the Concert Ceilidh in the evening and there may be a chance to perform some of the tunes too! A partnership between the TMSA Edinburgh & Lothians Branch’s Northern Streams festival and the Lowland & Borders Pipers’ Society.

The defining voice of contemporary English Folk Music, Kate Rusby's exquisite interpretations of traditional songs and finely wrought self-penned tunes have won her an audience that reaches beyond the genre. A rare achievement for a folk artist but entirely understandable given Rusby's expressive vocals that invest whatever she sings with irresistible emotional depth. On stage Rusby delivers every time. Her bands never cease to amaze, always comprising the cream of Britain's folk instrumentalists, while her between-song stories and introductions are cut through with a hugely engaging Yorkshire wit. She is truly an artist to be cherished by lovers of good music everywhere.
A great way to round off your Ceilidh Culture experience with a wee bit of dancing, music, song, story and seeing what has been taking place in workshops and rest of the festival. Callum MacMillan is a fine finger-pickin' guitar and bouzouki player and a seasoned singer with an unmistakable voice. His extensive repertoire reaches from the Scottish Folk Revival and contemporary songs to Irish songs and ballads. But he also has a knack of interpreting American folk and blues.
